Barnet’s Labour councillors have welcomed TfL’s announcement that work to make Burnt Oak Underground station step-free will begin this year.

Work will begin in August 2026 and finish the following winter. The station should remain open for all but two weeks during that time.

Changes will also include a new elevated walkway and footbridge, with a new lift providing step-free access between the island platform and street level. An accessible secure public toilet will also be built at the station and there will be CCTV in key positions.

Burnt Oak Councillors, Labour’s Sara Conway, Charlotte Daus and Kamal Gurung said: “It has been great working with our Labour GLA member for Barnet and Camden Anne Clarke and our Labour Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan to secure these changes for Burnt Oak. No one should be barred from our transport system due to disability, and these changes will make the station far more accessible.

“Transport for London (TfL) previously committed to reviewing and prioritising 10 Tube stations for step-free access and Burnt Oak Station was one of those stations.

“After many meetings and continued collaboration between ward councillors, TfL officers, the London Assembly Member, and Barnet Council representatives, this project will now go ahead.

“This is a significant achievement that will make Burnt Oak Station more accessible for everyone, particularly disabled passengers, older people, parents with pushchairs, and anyone with mobility needs.

“It’s great the project will also include the provision of an accessible public toilet at the station, which will be a valuable addition for residents and visitors alike.

“Thank you to everyone who worked together to make this happen. This is a positive step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible transport network for our community.”

AM Anne Clarke, who is also a Labour councillor for Cricklewood said: “Labour in London is leading a revolution in transport accessibility, with now more than a third of the Tube network and over half of London Overground stations now accessible. We will continue to push for improvements throughout the borough, including making Totteridge and Whetstone station step-free.”
