Barnet has provided more council homes for new families under one year of Labour than under four years of the Conservatives.

During the last Conservative administration that ran from 2018 to 2022, council homes were provided for 605 new households. But in one year of Labour administration (2024/25), 680 council homes for new households were provided.

Despite being the borough with the second largest population in London, during the Conservative years Barnet only provided council homes for new households at one third of the London average. Under Labour it provides such homes at a greater rate than the London average.

It comes as a result of Labour’s drive to secure 1,000 new homes for social rent this municipal term.

Other reforms to bring greater stability to those needing social housing have included abolishing two- and five- year tenancies in favour of fixed arrangements, and offering a choice of two homes to new households.

Barnet Labour’s Cabinet member for Homes and Regeneration and Deputy Leader, Councillor Ross Houston, said:

“Because of this Labour administration, hundreds of families can live in secure and affordable accommodation, the basis of a flourishing life.

“Homes which are safe and in good condition, with decent kitchens and the space for children to play and do homework. Those families could have been in overcrowded and precarious conditions or in temporary accommodation if the Conservatives were still in.

“The Conservatives scoffed when we said we wanted to be ambitious in increasing our stock of affordable homes. But we will continue pushing for as many new homes for social rent as possible in the years ahead.”
