Barnet Labour analysis shows that the borough’s households will save more than £22 million in energy bills from April, due announcements in the recent budget.
Chancellor of the Exchequer, Labour’s Rachel Reeves, announced that families will save on average £150. Poorer households that benefit from the Warm Homes Discount will save £300 off energy bills in total.
Other cost-saving measures in the Budget included:
- Commuters will save hundreds of pounds on their season tickets after rail fares were frozen for the first time in 30 years.
- An extension of the temporary 5p fuel duty cut for an extra 5 months, a further fuel duty freeze, and the new UK wide Fuel Finder scheme will save the average driver £89.
- Boosting pay-packets with a £900 rise for full time workers on the National Living Wage and National Minimum wage. Full-time workers on the 18-20 National Minimum Wage rate will see a £1,500 rise.
- Thanks to the government’s commitment to the pension triple lock for this parliament, pensioners on the full new state pension will receive an extra £575 a year from April 2026.
Publishing the analysis, Barnet’s Labour Leader, Councillor Barry Rawlings said: “Both nationally and locally, Labour is tackling residents’ cost of living problems. Locally we are partnering with the Green Doctor to help people reduce their bills, and our Residents Support Fund helps those in need.
“Labour’s £22 million boost to energy bill payers in Barnet shows that Labour both cares and delivers.”
