Barnet Labour has set out an ambitious agenda for Barnet’s High Streets in a motion adopted at a meeting of the Full Council on 21st October.
Speaking after the meeting which called for action to support town centres, Barnet’s Labour Leader Barry Rawlings said:
“Renewing our high streets is a priority for residents and is our priority. I am asking officers how we use the new powers the Government is giving us to clear away empty shops, stop too many gambling outlets and support business owners when negotiating rents.
“We will also look to take what’s worked from around the borough and make sure every high street can benefit, be it by tackling overparking by delivery drivers, continuing to develop our CCTV facilities or new public art to boost our town centres’ pride.”
The Government has recently published its Pride in Place reforms which will enable communities to shape their high streets.
Councillor Phil Cohen of East Barnet said: “The Conservatives lack any ambition of our High Streets. Barnet Labour has put together a positive vision to support our shopping areas, like our own in East Barnet Village.”
