Flytipping in Barnet reduced following Labour’s reintroduction of the community skips service.

The data was revealed following a question by a Conservative councillor at a meeting of full council at Barnet on 15th July 2025.

In the six months leading up to Labour’s community skip service in November 2022 there were 5,716 fly tips removed. But for the six months after, this was only 3,876 – a reduction of one third.

The community skips service was axed by Barnet Conservatives at a time when residents are concerned about the state of litter in the borough.

Labour brought back the service and this was followed by a reduction of fly tips.

The community skips service offers residents the opportunity to get rid of up to 3 large unwanted household items every 3 months for free.

The community skips service is visiting more than 50 locations from July to October, and locations can be found here: https://www.barnet.gov.uk/recycling-and-waste/community-skips-service/community-skip-locations-and-dates

Barnet’s Labour Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, Cllr Alan Schneiderman said:

“When the Conservatives took away the community skip service, they were ignoring residents real concerns about the amount of fly tipping in the borough.

“We brought in back in our first year, and the results are clear.

“We know that residents worry about the state of the borough, and we will always push forward on dealing with flytipping, whether through the community skips service, our revitalised CCTV and more enforcement action against offenders.”
