Barnet’s Labour councillors have agreed to support community groups to access funding to mark Black History Month in a motion at Full Council passed this week (26 July).

The motion, proposed by Cllr Linda Lusingu (Friern Barnet ward), calls on the Council to work with Barnet’s diverse communities to promote a programme of events throughout October each year, including co-designing a schools’ programme with pupils and teachers.

This year’s Black History Month theme is ‘Time for Change: Action not words’ with a focus on ensuring we acknowledge and learn from the past, but also work to improve the future, through action, not just words.

In her speech to Full Council, Cllr Lusingu said:

“Black History is also British History – it is not just for black people it is for all people, adults and children alike. Sharing history gives a sense of our shared humanity. It increases a sense of belonging, gives us a greater understanding of each other and reduces discrimination.

“Barnet is a diverse borough with over 40% of the population describing themselves as Black, Asian or Ethnic Minority. This motion recognises the contribution our BAME communities make in our borough.

“One of the challenges is to create a programme that authentically represents our communities. This is a key reason why I stood to be a councillor, to ensure my community is represented in this space and that the needs of communities are understood.

“Communities know what they want, and our job is to engage them, listen to them and support them in achieving their goals. Black History Month is our opportunity to share the universal stories of triumph, of social justice, of perseverance and achievements. But this year, let’s make it about so much more.

“Black History Month offers us all the opportunity to learn.

“If we’re serious about allyship, it’s Time for Change: Action Not Words.”

Ends.
