The action comes as there continues to be a shortage of affordable good quality housing across the borough.

Working ceaselessly until all our residents have a decent home will always be a key commitment for Barnet Labour.

The move will also save the borough money. Hundreds of families have the opportunity to move out of temporary accommodation, which is not good for families and expensive for the borough.

New council homes are projected to save the council millions in the long term.

Other action includes pushing developers to ensure that we push that 50 per cent of the homes that they build are affordable, compared to a lower 33 per cent target which was the height of the previous Conservative administration’s ambition.

Council tenants now receive secure lifetime tenancies, as opposed to a two or five year
tenancies, providing security in their lives.

And council home applicants on being given an offer, will be given a choice of two homes helping make sure they can lives somewhere that is appropriate for their situation.

We have brought planning back in-house so we can better shape developments in Barnet so they provide the sorts of homes our residents need.

Labour has also put millions into work to tackle the damp and mould that affects too many households.

Barnet Labour’s Cabinet Member for Homes and Regeneration said, Cllr Ross Houston, said:

“Having a safe, warm, appropriate home is completely foundational to our lives, whether we are starting out as young adults, raising a family or are an older resident.

“Ensuring that we have provided a 1,000 new council homes by 2026 is a core mission for Barnet Labour to make that a reality for as many residents as possible.

“We are also committed to treating social tenants with dignity, providing choice and security.

“Our housing action reality shows how Labour makes a difference to people’s lives.”
