Barnet’s Labour Council is committed to tackling climate change.
Barnet Labour has set itself testing targets for net zero – making sure as much harmful Carbon Dioxide is taken out of the atmosphere than is put into it.
Our Net Zero target for the council is 2030, and our target for the borough as a whole is 2042.
This contrasts to the Conservatives locally and nationally, who are wobbling on whether to tackle climate change or even to believe in the science.
The Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has scaled back his ambition on Net zero, postponing the transition to electric cars and more environmentally friendly heat pumps.
Meanwhile Barnet Conservatives raised doubt on the scientific consensus behind climate change in a debate in the council chamber, claiming there was no evidence that extreme weather is being caused by climate change and accusing scientists of being wrong for the last fifty years.
Barnet Labour is fully committed to the climate change agenda. Key measures include:
- Planting 100s of trees
- Retrofitting social housing to be more energy efficient.
- More air quality monitoring
- Installing more electrical vehicle charging points as that is what residents want
- Grants of up to £15,000 for community groups towards environmental initiatives.
Cllr Alan Schneiderman, lead member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “There is only one party in Barnet that fully backs the green agenda, and that’s Labour. It’s a choice between Barnet Labour who are determined to play our part in tackling man-made climate change, and Barnet Conservatives who aren’t even sure they believe in it.”
