Labour councillors are demanding answers from Barnet Council regarding claims, reported in the Ham and High, that a former litter enforcement officer employed by a Barnet contractor had been instructed to target ethnic minority people for fines, on the basis that they were less likely to appeal. The former officer also claims that he was sacked after whistleblowing about these allegations.
Barnet Labour Environment spokesperson, Cllr Alan Schneiderman said:
“These allegations are very serious. There is no place for racism in Barnet, targeting people for litter fines on the basis of their ethnicity is completely unacceptable. We demand Barnet Council investigate these claims immediately. If the contractor, Kingdom Services Group, is found to have operated as reported, then the Council’s contract with them must be terminated.”
Barnet Labour Group Leader, Cllr Barry Rawlings added:

“There are serious questions for the Council to answer about the practices and performance of yet another contractor, and of the Council’s management of these contracts. The Council has talked big about their anti-racism credentials, and this is a serious test about whether their actions match their words.”

Ends.
