The Mayor of London has said he will not be calling-in Barnet Council Planning Committee’s decision to reject the proposed development at the former Gas Works site in New Barnet.  The development was rejected unanimously by the Planning Committee on the grounds of overdevelopment, scale and height. Thousands of residents had signed petitions against the development and were supported by their local Labour councillors.

Labour East Barnet councillor, Jo Cooper said:

“I’m delighted to hear that the Mayor will not be calling this development in, and that the Planning Committee decision to reject it will stand. It is now up to the Secretary of State to decide whether he will call it in, and I hope that he doesn’t let us down with his decision as he did in the past by forcing through the North London Business Park development against the wishes of the local Planning Committee. ”

Labour East Barnet councillor, Laurie Williams said:

“This is very good news as the development would have been huge overdevelopment that residents and local councillors alike were completely opposed to. ”

Labour Barnet & Camden London Assembly candidate, Anne Clarke said: “This is welcome news to the community and all those who campaigned against this overdevelopment.”

Ends.
