A Childs Hill school could save £15,000 every year on energy bills, after London’s Labour Mayor has provided funding for energy efficiency.
Wessex Gardens Primary and Nursery School has won a share of London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan’s £12.5 million pilot programme to help schools become more energy efficient.
It is one of 38 schools across the capital that will benefit from the funding for measures such as LED lights, solar panels and heat pumps that will save schools money off their energy bills.
The plans are intended to save schools money, and help London reach ‘Net Zero’ – only putting in as much climate changing carbon dioxide into the air as it takes out – by 2030.
The average investment per school is £77,000, meaning that a full return may only take a few years.
The initiative is intended as a pilot programme which may be rolled out to all London schools in future.
Ward councillor Giulia Innocenti, speaking on behalf of all three Childs Hill members that include Cllr Matt Perlberg and Cllr Nigel Young, said: “Tackling climate change not only saves the planet but saves money as well. Congratulations to Wessex Gardens for pioneering this effort that we hope will transform all our schools in the years ahead.”
Barnet’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, Cllr Alan Schneiderman said: “I am so proud that Wessex Gardens is playing its part in helping London reach Net Zero. While some politicians are going wobbly on Net Zero, this Labour Government, Labour Mayor and Labour Council are committed to reducing our energy bills and combatting climate change.”
