Barnet’s Strategic Planning Committee have agreed to oppose, on the basis of height and massing, the former B&Q site development at the forthcoming public inquiry following their meeting earlier this week (8 Nov).

The decision was made in response to the Secretary of State’s intervention to call-in the planning application after it had received planning permission at an earlier meeting of the Planning Committee in September 2021.

The Committee this week heard from the two local ward councillors about the impact that the 1,049 units of up to 18-storeys would have on the local area, and the strength of opposition to it from the local community, including 2,211 objections.

Labour Cricklewood councillor, Anne Clarke said: “I am delighted that the Committee has listened to local residents and now agreed to oppose this monstrous mega-high development at the public inquiry. This is a great site for residential development but what has been proposed is clearly unacceptable.”

Labour Cricklewood councillor, Alan Schneiderman said: “This is great news for the local community who have been fighting this development for years. I am pleased that the Committee finally saw sense, and that the Council will be standing-up to the developer against this kind of overdevelopment and tower block blight. I hope the planning inspector agrees and rejects this B&Q scheme.”

Ends.
