A campaign to highlight a series of problems with safety and traffic on Long Lane in East Finchley has taken its first step forward after the Finchley and Golders Green Area Committee (23 Feb) agreed to fund a feasibility study to look at improvement options.

East Finchley Labour Councillor Arjun Mittra tabled a member’s item at the committee identifying all the issues residents wanted addressed, after spending several months working with ward colleagues, Cllrs Claire Farrier and Alison Moore, and Barnet Council Officers.

These issues related to safety and the lack of a pedestrian crossing between Church Lane and Squires Lane, and a lack of double yellow lines at the junction of adjoining roads meaning cars park on corners, obstructing views. The Councillors also sought to look at problems of speeding.

Cllr Mittra said:

“I am pleased that we are making good progress on this issue. It has taken a long time for the Council to understand all the issues involved, and the changing circumstances of the road. Congestion was a serious problem here last year due to diversions from East End Road and The High Road, creating a lot of frustration.

“After the serious and fatal accidents on our roads in 2019, we have been committed to making our roads safer and this is another package we have delivered, after improvements to the Church Lane junction, the 5 Bells crossing and the new crossing on the High Road.”

Ends.
