Labour councillors are concerned that the Council’s budget plan to raise £3m from a parking review, including controlled parking zones (CPZ), over the next four years could lead to the whole borough being placed into a CPZ.

An additional recommendation moved by Labour councillors at the Environment committee meeting on 18 January was unanimously accepted and secured agreement that a single boroughwide CPZ will not be introduced. The recommendation also set out the principle that any review of existing CPZs or the introduction of new CPZs should be based on the needs of local residents, businesses and improving road safety and not the objective of raising money for the council.

Cllr Alan Schneiderman, Barnet Labour’s Environment spokesperson said: “We know that residents have mixed views on controlled parking zones (CPZs) and that what works in one area will not work in another.

“In reviewing existing CPZs and in considering the introduction of new CPZs, it is important that the needs of local residents, businesses and improving road safety remain paramount rather than the need to fill the council’s financial black hole.”
