East Finchley Councillor Arjun Mittra has written to Barnet Council demanding a three-point plan to improve the “atrocious” state of Cherry Tree Wood where bins regularly overflow causing litter and the basketball court surface is badly in need of repair.

Councillors have received reports of several bloody and painful injuries to players falling on the current uneven and damaged concrete surface of the basketball court.

Councillor Mittra has asked Barnet Council for the basketball court and tennis courts to be properly resurfaced, and also for whoever is granted the kiosk lease to take responsibility for emptying overflowing bins. He has also asked for direct and effective engagement with the local community on management of the Wood.

Councillor Mittra said:

“Barnet Council’s neglect of Cherry Tree Wood is shameful, and it is in an atrocious state. It is time Barnet invested properly in the Wood and installed appropriate surfacing for the basketball and tennis courts.

“Residents have been complaining to me for years about the overflowing bins and the Council could easily require the kiosk leaseholder to take responsibility for emptying them.  This practical solution would address the fact that the Council say they don’t have the resources to empty the bins more regularly.

“And we need better engagement with the local community on the management of Cherry Tree Wood. It is high time Barnet stopped ignoring local residents and listened to their concerns.”

Ends.
