82% of residents responding (5,159) oppose the £70 annual garden waste collection charge.

Barnet’s Labour councillors have launched a petition calling on the Council to scrap the proposed £70 annual garden waste collection charge.

5,159 residents (82% of respondents) opposed the introduction of the charge in the Council’s consultation, but the Conservative Council is proposing to plough ahead regardless.

A report scheduled to be discussed at next week’s Environment Committee (Mon 20 Jan), recommends that the charge be implemented despite the strength of opposition from residents in the consultation.

Barnet Labour spokesperson for Environment, Cllr Alan Schneiderman said: “It’s clear that Barnet residents overwhelmingly reject the proposal to charge residents for collecting their garden waste. This is an unfair and environmentally unfriendly garden tax. At the last local election, the Tories promised to maintain Barnet’s bin collections, since then we’ve had a botched reorganisation leading to thousands of missed collections, the scrapping of the separate food waste collection service and now a new charge is proposed for green waste collections. Barnet’s waste service budget may be £2 million overspent but its simply not fair to make residents pay the price.”
