Following concerns over Islamophobic comments made online and in a petition by some objectors to the planning application submitted by the Centre for Islamic Enlightening for the Hippodrome in Golders Green, Leader of the Barnet Labour Group, Cllr Barry Rawlings said:
"The planning application by the Centre for Islamic Enlightening has created controversy with a petition of 6000 signatures voicing concern about its impact.
"Barnet Labour supports the right of residents to object to an application but also supports the constraint that any decision about an application must only be made based on legitimate planning reasons.
"However, some of the objections that were posted on the Council website were clearly Islamophobic and driven by hate. This is unacceptable.
"We believe that the several and diverse faiths that have found a home in Barnet are one of our strengths as a community and something to be celebrated. As part of the Labour Party we believe there is no place for Islamophobia, anti-Semitism or any form of hate crime."
