Statement on Barnet Supported Living Services

Following publication of the Care Quality Commission inspection of Your Choice Barnet run Supported Living Services for adults with learning disabilities and mental health needs Labour’s Spokesperson on Adults Social Care and Health, Cllr Barry Rawlings said:

“It is imperative that the care of vulnerable adults is adequately funded by the council and managed properly. The inspection report highlights serious failings, and while Your Choice Barnet maintain many have been addressed since the inspection was undertaken, the impact of temporary staff and low pay on the quality of this service is something the Labour Group have been raising for some time and it remains an issue for Barnet Council.

“Barnet is now a ‘commissioning council’ but if it wants to commission sensitive services like these from third parties it must provide adequate funding to ensure a good quality service can be delivered by trained, permanent, high quality staff.

“We support the call by Your Choice Barnet for the service to be re-inspected so that an assessment can be made about improvements that have been implemented since the first inspection took place.

“In the meantime we have put the inspection report on the agenda of the next meeting of the Adults and Safeguarding Committee on 19 March - the committee must review the service in the light of this inspection report, and in particular review whether the service needs to be brought back in-house.”
