Your local library is under threat: Save Our Library Service

Over the last year Barnet's Conservative Council have consulted residents on changes to libraries including cutting £2.85m from the library service from a budget of around £4.8m - a cut of 60%! Over 3,800 residents responded to the consultation with 97% opposing library closures.

The Barnet Tories have now published a revised cuts plan for the Library Service with the following proposals:

  • Library staff cut by 46% - with the slack to be picked up by volunteers
  • Staffing hours cut by 70% - with many Libraries left completely unstaffed at times
  • Library floor space shrunk by up to 88%
  • Childs Hill, Mill Hill, East Barnet & South Friern Libraries to be run by volunteers as "partnership libraries"

The cuts in staffing hours mean libraries will be unstaffed for much of  the time and students under the age of 16 will be excluded, with homework support only available at six "core" libraries.

There is no coherent business plan for the Library Service, and we are worried that these latest proposed cuts will mean many libraries are not sustainable in the future

The plans were be discussed at a special meeting of the Children, Education, Libraries & Safeguarding Committee on Monday 12 October at 7pm, Hendon Town Hall, and have now been referred to the Full Council meeting on 20 October.

If you love your local library help us take your views to the council by signing our petition!

We the undersigned petition Barnet council to keep our local libraries open.

Libraries provide a place from which to borrow books, to get access to free information and ICT, they provide community space for social activities, reading groups, early years services for young mums and toddlers, they help prevent the social isolation of older people, support children’s literacy and learning development, provide study space for students, are a place for job-seekers to look and apply for work and improve their work based skills, and can be a base for entrepreneurs to create business support and development hubs.  They are the heart of local communities and need to be supported.

Coming from a low income family, East Barnet Library was the lifeblood of my education as we could not afford new books. To complete most homework assignments meant a trip to the library.
