The Revenues and Benefits service collects revenues for the council - particularly Council Tax - which provides the money to run vital services. Get this wrong and it will lead to extra cuts in services, and increases in council tax to make up for lost revenue. Just a 1 per cent drop in the council tax collection rate means a loss of £2.2m to the council in any one year.
Revenues and Benefits also administers benefits to local people - if this is not done efficiently, or if computer systems fail, it can assist fraud or lead to families becoming homeless. The service also deals with claiming Housing Benefit Subsidy from the government that the council is entitled to. A loss of 1 per cent in subsidy in any one year equates to £2.6m.
If any of this goes wrong Barnet residents lose out.
