One Barnet: The Council did not consult as they should have

Leader of the Barnet Labour Group, Cllr Alison Moore said:

“Although the legal challenge to the two One Barnet contracts has been ruled out on the technicality of being “out of time”, this is no great victory for the Council in terms of democratic accountability.

The Judge has made it quite clear that the Council did not consult as they should have done and that it would have been very easy for them to do so.

There are now so many examples of where this council has failed to consult local residents, or has simply ridden roughshod over the results of any consultation on important issues – it’s no wonder people are angry.

The Conservative councillors running Barnet council should remember that they are elected by the public, and that they are there to serve the public.

If they really believed in democratic engagement they would learn from their mistakes and undertake a consultation on One Barnet straight away. I call on them to do so -  without that there will always be a real question about the legitimacy of the One Barnet programme.

Engaging local residents on key issues of concern should be at the heart of what the Council does, at the moment this is just not happening, and contrary to the Council’s motto they are definitely not “putting the community first.”
