My response to Cllr Maureen Braun of Hendon Ward

This is in response to Cllr Braun's email to me earlier today.

Dear Cllr Braun,

Thank you for your prompt response.

I am disappointed by your response. oneBarnet is the largest and most complex outsourcing project in the history of local government. No other authority has gone as far as Barnet, and a three line response hardly seems proper. Not only will this administration be handing over £1bn worth of contracts to just two companies, it will also make your role as a councillor somewhat redundant, as you will have little control of the services being provided. I have a strong feeling that the next step in this process will be to reduce the number of councillors.

To date, all contracts this large have failed or have provided a lower quality of service, you only need to look at the disaster surrounding G4S or more concerning, the Serco contract with NHS Cornwall (http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/nhs-watchdog-severely-reprimands-serco--a-private-company-providing-out-of-hours-gp-services-in-cornwall-7953412.html)

The oneBarnet project started long before the times of austerity, stating that this has to happen due to budget constraints is a flagrant lie.

I have special concerns regarding adult social care provision, and potential consequences involving the third sector. As a supporter of Jewish Care & Norwood, charities which works closely with Barnet Council and rely on many of its care provision services i hope you can catagorically state that future support for these organisations, and other third sector organisations will be secure. I know for a fact that Jewish Care are concerned by the oneBarnet project.

I would be grateful for a more comprehensive response outlining your position on all of the aspects as listed below of the oneBarnet programme and how each of these services will be improved by oneBarnet.

I have just received another response from Cllr Maureen Braun, as below:

Braun, Cllr Maureen Conservative 20 July 2012 15:24
To: Adam Langleben

I cannot answer your list in honestly, as I personally have little or no input into the specific services outlined. However, I am satisfied that in the one where I am most involved – planning – the councillors will have just as much control as they already do,. I did ask a lot of questions.
