Labour councillors call for Great Northern Rail operator to account for deteriorating service

Barnet's Labour councillors are calling for Great Northern Rail operator, Govia, to attend a future Environment Committee meeting to account for the deteriorating service. Labour's Cllr Adam Langleben has submitted a member's item to this week's committee meeting (29 Sep) asking for a discussion on the issue.

The Great Northern route from London Moorgate to Welwyn Garden City, calls at a number of railway stations in Barnet - New Southgate, Oakleigh Park and New Barnet - but has recently suffered from regular cancellations – almost on a daily basis.

One local resident and commuter, James Dawson - who will be speaking to the  Environment Committee on Thursday (29 Sep) - has provided details of recent cancellations to the service that he has been affected by on three consecutive days at the end of August. The details of those cancellations are:

· Friday 26 August, the 08.24 from New Southgate to Highbury & Islington
· Saturday 27 August, the 18.47 from Finsbury Park to New Southgate
· Sunday 28 August, the 10.58 from New Southgate to Highbury & Islington

Cllr Adam Langleben said: “The effect of so many cancellations means that local residents in the borough cannot rely on Great Northern operating the service as advertised, which is an unacceptable state of affairs.

"A poor commuter rail service doesn't just rip-off and inconvenience individual people, it has an adverse impact on London's economy. Govia's parent company reported profits of £100m this year, and yet commuters are suffering the misery of deteriorating rail services. Rail operators must be held to account for the services they run, and I think it is important that local people and the rail using public are given the opportunity to see them held to account.

James Dawson said: "For me, in getting to work and for getting around on the weekend, the Great Northern service is vital, cancellations cause major problems and suggest that the operator just doesn't care about me or other local rail users."

"The Great Northern route from London Moorgate to Welwyn Garden City, calls at a number of railway stations in Barnet - New Southgate, Oakleigh Park and New Barnet - but has recently suffered from regular cancellations – almost on a daily basis. One local resident has informed Labour councillors of the following cancellations to train services:
· Friday 26 August, the 08.24 from New Southgate to Highbury & Islington
· Saturday 27 August, the 18.47 from Finsbury Park to New Southgate
· Sunday 28 August, the 10.58 from New Southgate to Highbury & Islington
In each instance the cancellations had a knock on affect leading to later cancellations. The effect of so many cancellations means that local residents in the borough cannot rely on Great Northern operating the service as advertised, which is an unacceptable state of affairs. I request that the Chair of the Environment Committee consider inviting the route operator, Govia, to attend a future meeting to account for the deteriorating service."
