Labour councillors along with local businesses and residents are calling for lights to be put on the Christmas tree at Tally Ho corner in North Finchley. The tree is a permanent fixture and was installed as part of the North Finchley project funded by the then Mayor of London’s Outer London Fund in 2014.
Councillor Alan Schneiderman has now been told by council officers that there are “insufficient funds” within the budget to pay for the lights.
Local businesses say that the Christmas tree lights would help to support North Finchley town centre and encourage shoppers to visit during the festive period.
Woodhouse Ward Labour councillor Alan Schneiderman said: “This is the typical bah humbug attitude from Barnet’s Tory council. I want to see the council supporting our local high streets and town centres and putting lights on the North Finchley Christmas tree is another small way in which they can do this. I can't believe that the small amount of money needed for the lights can’t be found - it’s time for them to stop acting like Scrooge, get into the festive spirit and light up our Christmas tree”.
