Barnet’s Labour councillors are proposing the Council increase funds for maintenance and enforcement in our parks by making more use of community infrastructure levy and section 106 money from development taking place in the Borough. Labour East Barnet councillor, Jo Cooper, raised the issue in a member’s item at last week’s Environment Committee (25 Nov), and got agreement to refer it to the relevant committee for consideration.

Cllr Cooper said: “Barnet’s parks and open spaces are valued by residents and more important than ever during the Covid-19 pandemic so I’m glad that we got cross-party support to look at this. We need to ensure that regeneration schemes include some funding for maintenance of fitness equipment and other new facilities, upkeep of areas around waterways, and changed refuse patterns.”

Barnet Labour’s Communities spokesperson, Cllr Sara Conway said:

“We also need to review how the police and the Council’s community safety team can input more effectively into developing specific plans to reduce and design out crime in our parks.  Also, to consider a funding allocation for measures to deter anti-social behaviour and environmental crime.”

Ends.
