Labour councillors have got agreement that traffic speeds on adjoining side roads will be reviewed when the Council is introducing speed limits on main roads.
Cllr Geof Cooke raised the issue in a member’s item at last week’s Environment Committee (9 Sep). His member’s item said:
“The introduction of lower speed limits (for example 20mph) on some ‘main’ roads has led to an anomaly where the adjoining side roads then have a higher speed limit. We therefore ask for all adjoining side roads to be assessed when a lower speed limit is being proposed.”
This follows a member’s item from Cllr Cooke in July that asked the Council to streamline the process to implement 20mph zones where residents were calling for them. The Environment Committee in July agreed to look at this.
Councillor Geof Cooke said:
“I’m very pleased the Council will be including residential side roads in any review of main road speed limits. We need to ensure road safety measures are going to work for the surrounding area and that pedestrians on residential roads are protected as well as main roads.”
