Barnet's Labour councillors call for fire safety review at next Housing Committee

Labour councillors have submitted a member's item to the 26 June Housing Committee calling for a review of fire safety at all Barnet Homes properties and housing association properties located in the borough following the fire at Grenfell Tower in North Kensington.

The member's item from Cllr Ross Houston, the Labour Group Housing Spokesperson and Deputy Group Leader, also asks the Committee to look at what Barnet Council can and should be doing to ensure private blocks of flats have robust fire safety arrangements in place.

Cllr Ross Houston said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people who are affected by this terrible fire at Grenfell Tower.

"I can clearly see the block on my walk to work near White City every morning, and it is a dreadful sight.

"I understand that Barnet Homes have offered help in housing those made homeless by the fire. They have also committed to reviewing cladding systems used in Barnet in light of concerns about the way the fire spread at Grenfell Tower.

"Under current law all new residential blocks over 30m high must have sprinkler systems fitted. I have asked Barnet Homes to confirm the situation with their high rise blocks.

"I know that they carried out a comprehensive fire risk assessment following the Lakanal House fire in 2009, but we must review fire safety arrangements now to be absolutely sure they are robust."

Ends.

1. Text of Cllr Houston's member's item:

"Fire safety in social and private housing blocks

In light of the terrible fire at Grenfell Tower in North Kensington I request that the Housing Committee receive a report from Barnet Homes and the Deputy Chief Executive of Barnet Council reviewing the arrangements for fire safety at all Barnet Homes properties and also Housing Association properties located in Barnet.

I also request that the report addresses what role Barnet Council can and should play in ensuring private blocks of flats in the borough have robust fire safety arrangements in place."
