Barnet agree to review emergency planning following Grenfell Tower tragedy

Barnet Council's Community Leadership Committee (21 June) has agreed to review the borough's emergency planning arrangements in light of the Grenfell Tower tragedy to ensure any lessons are learned in providing information, advice and support to members of the public following a major incident.

Labour's spokesperson for Community Leadership, Cllr Kath McGuirk, raised the issue in an urgent member's item following reports of the difficulties experienced by members of the public in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire.

The Committee agreed to bring back a report on the work of the Borough Resilience Forum, Barnet Homes and other agencies in the borough in responding to emergencies.

The report will include the borough's approach to short term and long term planning for residents affected by major incidents. It will also detail the involvement of the Council and Barnet Homes in the London-wide response to the Grenfell Tower fire.

The Committee also agreed to receive a future report on the emergency response to the recent fire in Princes Parade, Golders Green.

Cllr Kath McGuirk said: "I want to thank the Chair of the Community Leadership Committee for accepting my urgent member's item, and the Committee for agreeing to bring reports on our emergency planning arrangements to a future meeting.

"We must ensure that we incorporate any lessons learned from the London-wide response to the Grenfell Tower tragedy into our emergency planning.

"We need to be able to deal with any emergency in the short term for those affected, but also in the long term when the attention of the world and press subsides.

"Barnet has dealt with numerous emergencies in the past and hopefully such events like Grenfell Tower will not be repeated, but there is always a human cost and we need to be there as a local authority for everyone touched by such events."
