We Want Our Say! Abbots Depot Proposal

Labour councillors have learned that Barnet council are proposing to move the council's main waste depot to the Abbotts Depot site on Oakleigh Road South in Brunswick Park ward.

The Abbotts Depot site is already being used as a depot by two companies, and local residents who live nearby have raised dust pollution and traffic nuisance problems, currently caused at the site, with their local councillors. The new council waste depot would mean a further 140 large heavy goods vehicle movements a day at the site.

The costs to purchase the site and convert it for use as a waste depot could top £10 million even though the site may only be available temporarily for 10-15 years because part of it may be needed for the Cross Rail 2 extension to New Southgate.

Jessica Brayne, a local resident, has started the petition below: will you join her?

We the undersigned:

  • Express serious concerns about the impact these proposals will have on traffic and quality of life in the local area;
  • Call for an opportunity to engage in meaningful consultation with the council about this before planning permission is sought for any one alternative;
  • Think these proposals are poorly thought through with no evidence base and cost to the council budget at a time of increased pressure.

Show some consideration and respect for the residents of the surrounding area of this site! We do NOT want the congestion, disruption and pollution that this ill thought out plan will cause. We need much more consultation, and information regarding how our local families will suffer as a result of a disgusting rubbish dump in the midst of our community. I would suggest somewhere less populated; you must be aware of a more suitable site as you have access to all the plans for land/property in the London Borough of Barnet.

This needs to be stopped now. The traffic around the area is bad enough and this is the last thing we need. About time the Council started thinking about the residents of Barnet who elected them to look after our interests not their own

We need to stop this. When the proposal was near Colney hatch lane all the residents were told and had sufficient time to campaign against this

Congestion in the friern barnet area is already horrendous, made worse by the closure of cut through roads to the north circular road being closed. The queues at the traffic lights at Friern Barnet has led to my road being used as a cut through and some cars come down at very fast speeds, with a lot of extra lorry traffic the area will become an even worse log jam with even more traffic pollution!

There should be full consultation with local residents on this issue as it will cause more congestion. Barnet Council has said that all residents in the local area need to be consulted about the need for traffic calming measures on Pollard Road which are supported by the majority of residents on the road. I cannot understand why the Council is not consulting with residents on this proposal.
